Human Centric Lighting: lighting focused on people
On average, we spend 90% of our time indoors, whether at home or in the office. Although it is something inevitable within our daily routine, it is interesting to reflect on how these spaces can affect our physical well-being and if there are actions or elements that can improve it.
A factor that plays a fundamental role in everyone's life is light. All living things operate according to a biological clock called the circadian rhythm, which controls biochemical functions, such as behavior and sleep, and which is synchronized by light and dark. That is why, when the light conditions are not favorable or correct, our body can experience visual fatigue, headache, muscle aches, etc. On the other hand, good lighting will directly influence comfort and health, thus enhancing productivity.
Healthy lighting design
In recent years, a new type of lighting has been developed called Human Centric Lighting (HCL) that aims to create an environment, especially in workplaces, that simulates the changes of natural light, with visual, biological and emotional effects.
This system adapts the characteristics and possibilities of artificial lighting to people's needs, with a different type of light for each moment of the day, always offering quality lighting. The natural light effect is achieved by adapting the color temperature and lighting levels thanks to an intelligent lighting source, such as a device with LED technology.
Human centric lighting manifests itself through the design of four types of light that favor our health, performance and mood:
- Circadian lighting: a light that changes color and intensity throughout the day, adapting to our vital rhythms.
- Activating lighting: thanks to its high blue component (or cold white), it manages to increase the ability to concentrate.
- Relaxing lighting: This type of light has a relaxing effect, thanks to its white and warm tones.
- Emotional lighting: it is a light that can adapt to our emotional needs through intensity and chromatic tonality.
The benefits…
Thanks to this type of lighting focused on people, several benefits have been detected, such as an improvement in the night cycle, biorhythm, mood, and optimization of people's performance.
In addition to being beneficial for health, human centric lighting is also beneficial for the environment, since it allows you to personalize a space using intelligent luminaires that contribute to significant energy savings.
Without a doubt, this new lighting concept is one of the best ways to achieve comfort and well-being in workspaces that do not have natural light. This fact shows us, once again, that technology is capable of bringing us a little closer to nature and at its rhythm.
